The trace of colour often seen in white diamonds is caused by the presence of
nitrogen atoms. Colour grades are determined by comparison to a series of
reference stones based on GIA standards, the most colourless being D. Generally,
the less colour the more valuable the diamond (with the exception of
fancy-coloured diamonds). Some diamonds exhibit a phenomenon known as
fluorescence under ultra-violet light.
