Emeralds were first mined in Egypt, with the first known stones dating back to at least 330 BC. Many ancient Egyptians were buried with emeralds around their necks as it was believed the stones could bring them eternal youth. Emeralds were used throughout Cleopatras reign as royal adornments and she was known to be a huge fan of the gemstone. Emeralds are formed when vanadium, chromium and iron are present in the mineral beryl. The varying presence of each of these three elements determines the colour of the gemstone. This beautiful gemstone is the birthstone for the month of May and is thought to symbolise renewal and rebirth, both of which are closely tied to Spring. The most common cut for emeralds is, not surprisingly, the emerald cut. This rectangular cut suits the natural six-sided prism formation of the gemstones, resulting in a bright and vibrant stone. The majority of natural emeralds have inclusions and blemishes that are visible without the need for magnification. These inclusions are one of the main factors that affect the price of the stone.
